Santiago de Compostela

Santiago de Compostela, commonly known as Santiago is the capital of Galicia in northwestern Spain. The town is named after the Apostle Saint James (“Santiago”), who is buried here. Santiago de Compostela is the final destination of the Camino de Santiago (Way of Saint James), the legendary medieval way of pilgrimship. Until today it attracts millions of visitors from all over the world thanks to its fantastic monuments. Many of them come to Santiago reaching the end of the Way of Saint James pilgrimage route; born in the 9th century, that has linked the city with the rest of Europe ever since. The pilgrims set out on foot, by bike, or even on horseback, to live this experience that combines adventure and spirituality. The final goal is the Cathedral in Santiago. In 1985 the city’s Old Town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

But Santiago has got much more to offer than the famous monuments. It is a town full of live, with one of the most famous Universities and a large number of students who guarantee youthful ambience.

Also the cuisine is worth mentioning when describing Santiago, as gastronomy is art here. There is a spectacular array of restaurants, bars and taverns, that serve high quality food for reasonable prices serving regional products, especially seafood, fish and beef.

Santiago is certainly one of Spain’s most monumental towns, with a particular architectonical style all of its own. Also the year-round programme of cultural events is impressive, there is always something going on: festivals, concerts, exhibitions, conferences and, of course, the Fiestas in honour of the Apostle Santiago.

Our small and family-like partner school in Santiago de Compostela is very centrally located, at a 2-minute walk from the historic district of the city and very close to all the major monuments. Relation with teachers is one of the most important values in the school. The students relate to their teachers not only in the classroom, but also during coffee breaks or other activities.
